Kathy Sierra has a piece on the "wake" created by plugins and other add ons.
Does your product or service support plug-ins and add-ons? Does it lend itself to follow-on products, accessories, support and training, etc.? Does it inspire others to be part of your wake?
This fits in really nicely with what I was saying about plugins and the long tail of features on Monday.
James makes another connection between wakes and long tails:
I don't know if the rhyme of metaphor was intended, but a Long Wake is a lot like a Long Tail.
Both James and Kathy's blogs are excellent reads, by the way.
Just as long as it's not "wake" in the sense of "a party after a death" !

actually i did parse the wake/funeral thought. lets think of it as a celebration of life... noone cries at an Irish wake.

Agreed on plugins and the long tail, they're a great way to support many non-mainstream features.
In a way you could say that Windows and other OSes are the most fundamental example of this approach, with the applications being the "plugins" or "add-ons".
