Ted-

Thanks much for the recap and kind words. It was great fun to meet so many interesting people, and especially the after-hours conversations. I think you may be right about the one-of-a-kind status on Strobist/One-Light.

Hope to see you again soon.

oh, we have enough (there are 53 members in the Flickr group for instance) but whether they're all motivated enough to come out - I don't know.
I've posted a call on Flickr again, emailed one person I know offline, and will just try to drum up some support.
(I suppose we could have a "ferry" meetup as a way of bridging the two groups too.)

I am not really sure that we have enough people on the island now. I have met a few more photographers, but none of them are on Flickr. I definitely would like to see something local start up, but I'm a bit at a loss as to how to make that happen.

yeah, I think he did say that. But it was in the stream, whether or not it came through to everyone, I don't know.

On a different subject, it seems to me we have enough people to do one of these 'meetup' things on BI now. Something a bit less formal than the "Photo Club" group (which I've always had a hard time relating too.) Maybe time to revive that flickr group, announce a subject/date and see who shows?

Rick,

A couple of weeks back there was a big Seatte Flickr Strobist get together at Green Lake. One of the folks took the picture of me, and the photoshopped the nice tree bokeh to that color. I really liked it, so I've been using (with his permission) for profiles. You can see the uncropped original at http://www.flickr.com/photos/maginashun/1000218048.

As far as rapport, that's absolutely true, and we spent a bunch of time talking about it with David in the bar in the evening. I don't know if David said it on Sunday, but on Saturday he said that a good moment with ok light is much better than a bad moment with great light. I felt that he did a good job of keeping things in perspective. Lighting is cool, but it's just a tool. If you think about the hypthetical shoot scenario - a big important person in 15 minutes or less, the rapport counts as much as the lighting, and you won't have as much time to set up the rapport as the lighting. Someone like David who shoots multiple people a day every day, has to have/develop the skill in order to succeed. And as you can tell from his presenting, he's definitely got it.

Wow, you suddenly improved your profile picture too!
What is that background? And you look so cynical!

I attended Sunday's workshop (hence the photo) and it was pretty interesting. David is an engaging speaker, and watching him work communicates even more information. Besides the technical content though, something I've noticed from people photographers is that rapport with the subject. David talked a bit about this, but frankly I think its a highly-overlooked aspect to portrait photography. Some people have this knack, the rest of us have to learn it.

Nice. From what you way, the OneLight workshop would have been a great hands-on start-up for me (though I might not have even had a digital SLR at that time). Hmm, ough I probably wouldn't have risked the higher expense, as green as I am with lighting.

Thanks for the wrap-up. I loved the seminar. I'd do it again, especially after more practice on my own.
